Bells Across America
Join the Daughters of the American Revolution and community partners for the nationwide event, Bells Across America, to commemorate the historic moment when church bells in Philadelphia rang out when the U.S. Constitution was signed on September 17,1787.
The Jane McAfee chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, would like to invite all citizens of Mercer County to join us in a special patriotic event, Bells Across America, on Thursday, September 17 at 4:00 p.m. It was at this time that the signers of the Constitution used a quill pen and ink to sign this famous document on September 17, 1787.In colonial times, church and public bells were a vital part of daily life and the heartbeat of the community. They called people to worship, announced important events, and connected colonists to one another and kept communities informed, alert, and well-prepared. Their ringing signaled freedom, responsibility, and self-governance. When the Constitution was signed, bells rang out across the colonies to announce the beginning of a new era of freedom. If your church has a bell, please consider arranging for your church bell to ring for one full minute at 4:00 p.m. in chorus with bells ringing downtown in front of the judicial center and across the country. Or just come down and join us in front of the judicial center! Bring your own bell and join us!Thank you, and we look forward to hearing your beautiful bells!Images
