Part-Time Circulation Assistant
Job Description: Circulation Assistants provide friendly service to patrons at the Circulation Desk and in all public areas of the library. They check materials in and out, shelve them accurately, and regularly shelf-read, straighten, and inventory the collection ensure that items are in good condition and readily available to library patrons. Circulation Assistants help patrons with library card applications, account questions, printing and faxing, public computers, simple information requests, and meeting room reservations. More complex issues are escalated to other library staff as appropriate. Persons in this position perform routine opening and closing tasks, walk through the library regularly to ensure that it is neat tidy, and notify the Circulation Manager of any problems. Depending on their interest, they may also use their individual talents to create displays, make collection development recommendations, or assist with public programs.
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Provide polite, friendly, efficient customer service to all patrons in person and by telephone.

Check materials in and out and pull patron-requested holds.

Accurately collect payments and make change for copying or fines.

Help new patrons apply for library cards; answer patron questions about their accounts, including overdues and lost or damaged materials.

Accurately shelve materials according to Dewey Decimal Classification. Shelf-read, straighten, and inventory collection areas as assigned to ensure that items are in good condition and easily accessible.

Assist patrons in locating materials, answer simple questions, and provide basic assistance with card applications, computers, printers, copiers, and faxing.

Create displays, assist with public programs, or suggest library materials for purchase as assigned.
Qualifications

High school diploma; 1-2 years of college preferred.

Must have a positive attitude and the ability to remain calm and polite with challenging patrons.

Previous library, retail, restaurant, or other public service experience required.

Must be able to file / alphabetize correctly. Experience with library circulation software such as Atriuum or Dewey Decimal Classification are a plus.

Must be proficient with computers, the internet, and Microsoft Office.

Love and knowledge of books is a plus.

Clean background check required.
Salary and Benefits

$15 / hour starting rate.

Limited paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave per MCPL policy.
Schedule
-
Tuesdays 8:45 am – 1:30 pm
-
Wednesdays 12:30 pm – 5:15 pm
-
Thursdays 3:00 pm – 7:45 pm
-
Fridays 12:30 pm – 5:15 pm
-
1-2 Saturdays per month 8:45 – 5:15

Occasional substitutions or trades when available
